Case Studies

Programme to look at ways of improving empathy with NHS managers

Background Context:

A group of NHS managers working in cross functional teams delivering a range of acute care services to patients.

The Need:

To introduce a programme focusing on empathy to build up a better quality of service for patients, their relatives and their carers.

The EI4Change programme including features of delivery:

 An initial one-day workshop was delivered to introduce the place for emotional intelligence in working with all stakeholders delivering care.

A focus on communication through active listening taking into consideration personal behavioural styles.

Introduction of ways of assessing behaviour, especially behavioural responses to stress.

Exploration and practice around ways of adapting behaviour to improve interactions with others.

Follow up workshop to review action plans and learning.

The Results:

Each person grew in self-confidence in their leadership capacity through having very specific support in growing their self awareness.

A method and standard of communication was introduced that improved team effectiveness.

Programme building upon MBTI® using TetraMap® to understand behavioural expression in charity managers

Background Context:

A team of managers working for a national health charity had looked at self awareness and team development using Myers Briggs Type Indicator (Step I).  The instrument has been used very successfully in management development programmes within the organization for a number of years.

The Need:

To facilitate further understanding of Type through the introduction of looking at differences in expressed behaviors using TetraMap. 

The EI4Change programme including features of delivery:

Planning how to blend the two personality frameworks together to develop their consistency and maintaining their integrity to give understanding and without confusion.

A workshop was delivered to review MBTI preferences and these explored within the context of a business setting.

Introduction of ways of assessing and recognising behaviour using TetraMap.

A focus on behavioural styles incorporating body language, posture, use of voice, etc.

Exploration and practice around ways of understanding expression of behaviour through Type to improve interactions with others.

Follow up workshop to review action plans and learning.

The Results:

A method and standard of communication was introduced that improved team effectiveness.

Each person developed a deeper understanding of themselves and how they operated within their team through behavioural expression.

Less stress within the team setting through better understanding of self and each other.

Better care offered to clients and carers through reduced stress.

Improved interactions through an awareness of expression of client’s and carer’s behaviour.
